ZION PREPPING FOR FUEL TRANSFER

By ExchangeMonitor
The Zion nuclear facility decommissioning project is on the verge of moving the spent fuel into the recently completed independent spent fuel storage installations, said ZionSolutions project manager Patrick Daly yesterday during remarks at the Nuclear D&D Supply Chain Conference in Charlotte, NC. Originally, the fuel was supposed to be moved in November, but delays pushed the date back. The project is currently waiting for Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval of the ISFSIs before moving forward with the fuel transfer. Daly said that the company has been prepping for the transfer by completing dry runs of how it will take place. He expects to have the transfer in full gear in the first quarter of next year, and he said it would take 54 weeks to complete the transfer. Once the fuel is moved, the company can complete tearing down the Unit-2 reactor’s internal segments and ship the Greater than Class C waste.
