YUCCA SERS SHOULD BE COMPLETED BY JAN. 2015

By ExchangeMonitor

he Yucca Mountain Safety Evaluation Reports should be completed and released by January 2015, according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission Deputy Director of Operations Michael Weber in a talk given yesterday at the 29th Annual Institute of Nuclear Materials Management’s Spent Fuel Management Seminar. Weber also said that the NRC would release each SER as soon as it is completed, rather than wait for all four to be finalized and released together. Currently, the NRC is re-assembling members of the original review process, a step that has already begun according to Weber. The NRC issued an Order in November of last year setting the path forward on re-starting the Yucca Mountain licensing review in order to comply with the writ of mandamus compelling the Commission to complete the review. A major part of the Order included the completion of the SERs as well as the need for another supplemental environmental impact statement from the Department of Energy concerning groundwater issues.
