Y-12 contractor Consolidated Nuclear Security is seeking a source for up to 6,800 metric tons of high purity depleted uranium metal and related material and services, the company said last week as it released a sources sought notice, though it’s unclear what the material might be for. In the Jan. 7 notice, CNS said it was seeking Expressions of Interest from companies “for informational, market research and planning purposes for a possible upcoming project.” CNS did not respond to a request for more information on the project. “The purpose of this request is to identify small business sources and the availability of commercial sources and services,” CNS said in the notice. EOIs are due Feb. 5.
In the sources sought notice, CNS said it was requesting information on the quantities and specifications of depleted uranium metal companies have available, along with cost and delivery schedule information. It also requested info on DU metal intermediary products like depleted uranium tetrafluoride that can be used to produce DU metal, as well as DU metal production from UF6, UF4 or partial processing, which entails converting UF6 to UF4. CNS said the National Nuclear Security Administration can supply up to 1,100 cylinders of UF6 for processing. Information on transportation and storage containers as well as support services for the containerization, transportation, storage, disposition of process waste and cleaning and recycling was also requested
