Wyoming Rep. Donald Burkhart (R) last week said he is preparing a bill that would allow the state to build an interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in its territory.
Burkhart spoke July 31 during the second day of a hearing of the Wyoming state legislature’s joint Minerals, Business and Economic Development Committee.
“We will see some kind of formal bill draft at our October meeting,” Burkhart said during the hearing.
According to Burkhart, the state could buy land on which to build the interim storage site for about $2 million.
“The estimated cost to build the facility would be about $400 million, none of which would come from the state,” Burkhart said during the hearing.
The joint committee was scheduled to begin another two-day meeting on Oct. 8, according to the legislature’s website.
