Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead on Saturday pledged to defend the state’s coal industry. While the Obama administration continues to issue regulations and orders making it harder for coal to prosper in the face of action on climate change, there may be a win-win solution out there, the Republican governor wrote in an editorial. “In the face of a national agenda that undervalues the importance of coal, it is more critical than ever that we commit to the challenges that face us and lead the way in effective solutions,’ he wrote.
Mead’s editorial, published by online news source WyoFile, notes the state’s investment in carbon capture and storage as a move toward compromise. “If climate change is the president’s major environmental concern, rather than chasing an unrealistic vision of a world without coal, pursue a vision that recognizes coal’s place in the world and invest to make it better. In Wyoming, we recognize coal’s place and are investing to make it better with the Integrated Test Center (ITC),” the governor wrote, referencing an ongoing project to build a center to test innovative uses of carbon dioxide.
