The Amentum-led tank management contractor at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state has inked a $8.9 million subcontract with Richland-based Fowler General Construction to build an interim surface barrier over the U Tank Farm.
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), which has Atkins as minority partner, announced the award Tuesday in a press release issued through DOE’s Office of Environmental Management.
“This will be the fifth tank farm on the Hanford Site to receive an interim surface barrier,” Becky Blackwell, program manager with DOE’s Office of River Protection, said in the release. DOE announced plans for the new barrier contract last November.
There are 16 underground single-shell radioactive waste storage tanks at Hanford’s U Tank Farm, 12 with capacities of 530,000 gallons each, as well as four tanks that hold 55,000 gallons each, according to DOE.
Construction of the 144,100-square-foot asphalt barrier should be complete in late 2023 and is meant to block rainwater and snowmelt from pushing existing contaminants in the soil closer to groundwater, DOE said in the release.
Fowler is an often-used Hanford construction subcontractor, including prior work for WRPS.
