IN THE INDUSTRY
Former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson has joined the technology giant Apple as the company’s top environmental officer, CEO Tim Cook announced earlier this week. Cook said Jackson would be reporting directly to him as Vice President for Environmental Initiatives. After being pressured by environmental groups like Greenpeace earlier this spring, Apple vowed to power its data centers with renewable sources of energy like solar, wind and geothermal after it was revealed that they were being powered by fossil fuels, according to the Washington Post. Jackson stepped down as EPA’s top official in February after four years at the Agency’s helm.
ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT
South Korea kicked off operations at the country’s first carbon capture demonstration project, the Yonhap News Agency reported late last week. Capture work began on a 10 MW unit at a thermal power plant at the Boryeong Complex on the country’s western coast May 24, the news outlet said. Quoting the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Yonhap said the unit would initially capture about 80,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the facility. “It is a test unit that will check its actual effectiveness in practice before the CCS unit is applied to larger power stations with a maximum generation capacity of 100,000-500,000 kilowatts,” Yonhap said, quoting a government press release.
