IN DOE
Grace Bochenek officially began work as the director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory this week. Bochenek replaces Scott Klara, who has led the lab in an acting capacity since taking over for former Director Anthony Cugini last fall. Prior to beginning work with NETL, Bochenek served for eight years as Director of the U.S. Army’s Research, Development and Engineering Command’s (RDECOM’s) Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC).
The Department of Energy and the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding late last week that creates a framework for cooperation in energy-related areas. The MOU will facilitate for knowledge sharing in the areas of carbon capture and storage, energy policy formulation, energy efficiency, the energy-water nexus, and unconventional oil and gas development. According to a DOE release, “the U.S. and UAE agreed on milestones and specific timelines to tackle the five areas of the MOU. Both delegations agreed to hold the next Strategic Energy Dialogue in Abu Dhabi in early 2015.”
IN THE EPA
Stan Meilburg will step into the role of acting Deputy Administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, replacing Lisa Feldt, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy told staff in an e-mail this week. Meilburg is the former Deputy Regional Administrator in Region 4 and had retired earlier this year, but has now agreed to return to the EPA. “Just a few months after he thought he retired, I asked Stan to come to Washington to help me deliver on the President’s agenda and EPA’s mission. That includes fighting climate change, protecting our water, continuing cleanup work, taking on toxics and chemical safety, and so much more,” McCarthy wrote. Feldt, who stepped into the position in August following the departure of Bob Perciasepe, will return to her prior position of Associate Deputy Administrator.
