A group of 160 environmental prize winners this week called on foundations and philanthropists to disinvest in fossil fuels and instead devote their endowments to climate mitigation efforts. The “Environmental Laureates’ Declaration on Climate Change,” which was published early this week in the form of a full page advertisement in the international edition of the New York Times, was developed by the European Environment Foundation (EEF). The EEF will now write to philanthropic foundations individually, asking them to invest in clean and low-carbon energy projects, withdraw investments from fossil fuel companies and make grants to support clean and low-carbon energy start-ups, according to an EEF press release.
Assistant Secretary of Interior for Policy, Management and Budget Rhea Suh will step into the role of president of the Natural Resources Defense Council in January, the NRDC announced this week. Suh will replace Frances Beinecke, who will leave the organization in December after serving nine years as president. “Rhea has the tenacity and talent to help our movement win on climate change,” Beinecke said in an NRDC release. “She understands that this is the greatest environmental, health and economic threat of our time, and she understands that this is the moment we can turn the tide.”
