ON THE INTERNATIONAL FRONT

A contract to supply pipe to transport carbon for the Abu Dhabi Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project was awarded to TMK Gulf International Pipe Industry (GIPI) early this week according to a TMK GIPI release. The project is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Masdar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Government-owned Mubadala Development Company. Once completed, the project will capture CO2 from the Emirates Steel Industries Factory in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi and transport it to reservoirs owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company southwest of the city. Capture is expected to begin in 2016.

The Italian government has agreed to provide €30 million to fund the Italian Centre of Excellence for Clean Energy at Sotocarbo’s research center in Carbonia, a Sotocarbo release reported last week. The center will focus on clean energy technologies, including carbon capture and storage. “This is a just the start,” said Mario Porcu, Sotacarbo president in the release. “I can already say that several international projects are underway at our research center in Carbonia and will be announced in the next few weeks.”

Brown Coal Innovation Australia (BCIA) will provide funding for a carbon capture research and development project aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from low-rank brown coal in Victoria, Australia the not-for-profit company announced early this month. According to a BCIA release, the project, which was selected in BCIA’s 2013-14 competitive R&D funding round, will combine carbon capture technology developed by CSIRO and technology developed by Japanese technology vender IHI Corporation. “This research project is targeting a 40 percent reduction in energy use of current post combustion capture (PCC) processes and will see the installation of a $1 million Japanese-built PCC pilot plant at AGL Loy Yang Power station; the first in Victoria to operate around the clock,” BCIA Chief Executive, Dr. Phil Gurney said in the release. A total of $650,000 was awarded by BCIA for the project.
