IN NRC
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission released this week its Project Aim 2020 report, which is a forward looking project to determine what the agency must look like to remain effective and efficient while maintaining public health and safety. According to the report, the NRC could be about 10 percent smaller in 2020 with a suggested workforce of about 3,400 employees, compared to 3,677 projected for fiscal year 2015. “This study gives us a starting point for our Commission discussions about how to position the agency for a different environment and different challenges,” NRC Chair Steven Burns said in a statement. “We will start that dialogue, but I want to be clear about one thing – in determining the size of this agency in the future we will not take any step that would compromise our mission of protecting the American people and our environment.”
IN DOE
The Department of Energy this week extended the response time an extra two weeks for its solicitation for a contractor to assist in the movement of spent nuclear fuel from research reactors to an unidentified national laboratory. The new response date will be March 9, compared to the original Feb. 23. The DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, through the Idaho Operations Office, is responsible for the disposition of university research reactor spent nuclear fuel, and this contract aims to help ensure the transportation of the fuel. According to the statement of work, the contractor would be responsible for all tasks required to transport spent nuclear fuel.
