IN DOE

Department of Energy Inspector General Gregory Friedman this week announced his plans to retire after serving for 17 years as DOE’s internal investigative official. Friedman will step down effective Oct. 3, 2015, which would end his run as longest-serving federal inspector general at a cabinet-level agency. “While the mission is important, the Department would not be making such advancements if it was not for the extraordinary people, both federal and contractor personnel, who make the organization work,” Friedman wrote in his resignation letter to Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz. “I will miss both the excitement of working on addressing the challenges the Department faces and the chance to interact with these talented people.” Friedman issued over 1,800 reports during his tenure, helping to identify $3.6 billion in funds that could have been put to better use and $2.2 billion in questioned or unsupported costs. His office also conducted over 1,500 criminal investigations that resulted in 2,190 convictions, suspensions/debarments, and civil administrative actions and $697 million in fines, settlements, and recoveries.

IN THE INDUSTRY

Centrus announced on July 10 that it has promoted Stephen Greene, Treasurer and Vice President of Finance, to CFO, Senior Vice President, and Treasurer, effective July 24. Greene has served in his current posts since 2007. “Since joining the company, I have been impressed with Steve’s financial acumen and strategic foresight,” Centrus President and CEO Dan Poneman said in a press release. “He has been instrumental in helping us reshape our enrichment business. His strong leadership in managing the company’s financial position will allow us to take full advantage of our fresh start in rebuilding the company and its contribution to the international nuclear fuel market.” Greene will succeed John Barpoulis, who will leave Centrus after a decade of work, which included steering  the enriched uranium  fuel specialist through “a period of significant change and restructuring,” according to the press release.
