IN NRC

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced this week that it has officially enacted the exemptions for emergency preparedness at the Kewaunee Power Station. The Commission had approved the exemptions back in August after Staff had recommended the changes would not have a significant impact on public safety. Dominion will still need to maintain an onsite emergency plan and response capabilities, but the 10-mile planning zone has been eliminated. The changes better reflect the risks associated with a decommissioning reactor, the NRC said. “The changes come in the form of exemptions from certain requirements in NRC’s regulations for operating nuclear power plants that may not be applicable for a plant undergoing decommissioning,” the NRC said in a release. “The NRC staff agreed with Dominion’s analyses that the exemptions are warranted because the risk of an offsite radiological release is significantly lower, and the types of possible accidents are significantly fewer, at a nuclear power reactor that has permanently ceased operations and removed fuel from the reactor vessel than at an operating power reactor.”

IN THE INDUSTRY

Kurion announced this week that it has promoted Yohei Iwasaki to vice president of Japan regional operations. In his new position, Iwasaki will continue to lead Kurion’s growing Japanese presence under Kurion President and Founder John Raymont. “Since joining Kurion, Yohei has demonstrated a tireless devotion to delivering successful projects for the Tokyo Electric Power Company,” Raymont said in a statement. “He has been instrumental in helping Kurion increasingly assist TEPCO in the complex cleanup of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site, and exhibits a personal dedication to helping Japan recover from the tsunami and earthquake of 2011. Moreover he has been an active leader in building a strong relationship with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which recently named Kurion as one of the companies awarded a grant to test its detritiation system.”

Perma-Fix Environmental Services is schedule to host its third quarter earnings call Nov. 6, the company announced this week. The company experienced lower than expected results for the first half of 2014, but a better third quarter is expected after some contracts announced in the second quarter did not come to fruition until this quarter. The call, scheduled for 11 a.m., will be available on the Company’s website at www.perma-fix.com, or by calling 877-407-0778 for U.S. callers, or +1-201-689-8565 for international callers.
