IN THE INDUSTRY

Perma-Fix Environmental Services announced this week that it has received a patent from the U.S. Patent Office for its Technetium-99 production technology. The Patent Office issued an allowance that granted Perma-Fix all the claims it made in its application for preparation of its Microporous Composite Material and its derivatives. “Issuance of this patent is a major milestone for the company,” Perma-Fix Chairman and CEO Lou Centofanti said in a statement. “The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted us protection for our intellectual property to produce Tc-99m. With this patent in hand, we look forward to advancing our cost-effective, non-uranium process, which we believe will reshape the global supply chain of Tc-99m.” According to a company release,  the patent includes the processes used to manufacture the resins, including: Selective separation of Tc-99m pertechnetate from Mo-99; enhanced sorption of Mo with a holding capacity in excess of 60 percent of the dry weight of the sorbent; sorbent and generator resistant to degradation by gamma and beta radiation and acid environments; sorption of selective isotopes from radioactive waste streams; and removal of heavy metals, such as mercury and arsenic, from waste water streams.

MHF Services announced this week that Paul Hickman will join the company as a Senior Business Development Manager. Hickman will focus on business development centered around radioactive waste removal projects for remedial and construction contractors, primary responsible parties, prime contractors, property developers, nuclear utilities, universities and government entities, the company said. Hickman has 24 years of technical sales and marketing for the environmental waste industry, with his most recent position as Director, Waste Services Broker and International Sales at Perma-Fix Nuclear Services/Diversified Scientific Services.  “We are excited to welcome this high-performing professional to MHF,” MHF Services Vice President and Director of Sales and Marketing Scott Dempsey said in a statement. “Paul has the specific industry experience and professional expertise to capitalize on business opportunities best suited to MHF’s capabilities. I am confident that he will be a key team player who will help MHF build upon our success.”

Cabrera Services Inc. announced late last week that Ann Burke has joined the company in the role of Senior Business Development Manager. According to the company, Burke has more than 20 years of experience in business development, proposal management, program management, and project management. “Ms. Burke’s primary role with the company will be to continue the growth of Cabrera’s business development program where she will provide support to all of the company’s business development, proposal, and capture management activities for federal and private sectors,” the company said in a release.

USEC’s subcontract with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to continue work on the American Centrifuge Project last week received an additional $6.7 million in funding, bringing total funding to approximately $33.7 million. The payment will run the program through the end of September. The ORNL-led effort includes two six-month option periods that would extend the contract through the end of Fiscal Year 2015 for a total value of $118 million.
