IN CONGRESS

Former Naval Reactors Government Affairs director Adam DeMella is joining the majority staff of the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, WC Monitor has learned. DeMella headed up Naval Reactor’s government affairs shop from 2001 until December. DeMella will assume most of the portfolio of former Senate Majority Clerk Tom Craig, who left the panel last month for a government affairs position with Duke Energy. Tyler Owens has replaced Craig as the majority clerk.

Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.) will serve as vice-chair of the Congressional Nuclear Cleanup Caucus, which is co-chaired by Reps. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) and Ben Lujan (D-N.M.). “Ensuring that the federal government meets its moral and legal cleanup obligations at Hanford and other sites across the country is one of my highest priorities, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Nuclear Cleanup Caucus as a vice-chair,” Newhouse said in a statement. “When it comes to advancing cleanup, it’s important for advocates to speak with one voice, and the Caucus is a tool to help achieve that goal. I recognize the many years of hard work and leadership that Doc Hastings provided as the founder of the Caucus, and it is in his spirit of collegial leadership that I look forward to making bipartisan, bicameral progress on nuclear cleanup issues.”

IN DOE

The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management is set to hold its next business forum for interested companies March 4 at DOE headquarters. Those wishing to attend should pre-register by Feb. 26 providing name, title, company name, and citizenship to Carol Ward via e-mail at [email protected]. On March 5, EM Deputy Assistant Secretary for Acquisition and Project Management Jack Surash is set to hold appointments with industries representatives to “give them the opportunity to voice their views openly with DOE,” according to an EM release. Those wishing to participate should note so in their pre-registration.

The Department of Energy plans to extend the due date for bids on the new Portsmouth infrastructure support services contract to “at least” Feb. 26, according to a notice issued late last week. Bids had been previously due by Feb. 19.

IN THE INDUSTRY

Hanford site services contractor Mission Support Alliance has named Bob Wilkinson its new chief operations officer, effective March 1. Wilkinson replaces Dave Ruscitto, who announced his plans to retire this week. Wilkinson has 20 years of experience at Hanford, most recently as manager of environment, safety, health and quality at tank farms contractor Washington River Protection Solutions. He also was acting chief operations officer and manager of base operations at WRPS. “Bob has significant experience in the government sector in all aspects of operations — operating nuclear facilities, decontamination and decommissioning, tank farms, waste site remediation, waste packaging and treatment, project management, environmental compliance, construction management, engineering, emergency response, radiological control — and all phases of project execution,” said Bill Johnson, president of MSA, in a message to employees.
