IN DOE

Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall is set to begin serving as the new Deputy Secretary of Energy Oct. 6, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a message to employees this week. She replaces Dan Poneman, who formally retired this week from the Department of Energy after serving as deputy secretary for five years. Sherwood-Randall previously served as White House Coordinator for Defense Policy, Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Arms Control, and was confirmed by the full Senate to serve as the new No. 2 official in DOE last month.

IN THE INDUSTRY

Dyan Foss officially took over as the new Global Managing Director for CH2M Hill’s Nuclear Sector late last week. Foss replaces Denny Ferrera, who is set to retire from CH2M Hill later this year after 39 years with the company. Among her previous positions, Foss served as Deputy Managing Director for the Dounreay Nuclear Decommissioning Program in the United Kingdom.

Parsons has promoted Rich MacFarland to senior vice president of government relations. MacFarland joined Parsons in 2010 and previously served as vice president of government relations for the company’s government services business unit. “We congratulate Rich on his well-deserved promotion. He has made a tremendous impact on the corporation since joining us in 2010, building on our relationships on Capitol Hill and across Washington, D.C.,” Parsons CEO and Chairman Chuck Harrington said in a statement. “His strategic insight and hard work have helped make our entire organization more effective.”

Senior Fluor executives Tony Umek and Joe Yanek were set to retire at the end of this week. Among his previous positions, Umek has served as vice president of Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions; and vice president of ESH&Q for Fluor Government Group in Richland, Wash. Yanek’s previous positions have included serving as Fluor Government Group’s Executive Director for Heath, Safety and Environment (HSE), and Nuclear Quality Assurance.

Ardent Technologies has won two support services contracts from the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management’s Consolidated Business Center. The first is an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract with a maximum value of $4 million over four years. Services to be provided include information technology operations support at CBC and “various locations across the EM complex,” according to a DOE release issued late last week.  The second ID/IQ contract totals $2 million over four years and covers information technology development and programming support.

Project Services Group and Trinity Engineering Associates won two small business set-aside support contracts from the Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management’s Consolidated Business Center this week. The Project Services Group contract is an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity contract with a maximum value of $4 million over five years. Work to be performed under the contract includes support with life cycle baseline development, direct cost estimating and analysis, updating EM cost and schedule estimates, supporting EM risk management planning efforts. The ID/IQ contract awarded to Trinity Engineering Associates has a maximum value of $4 million over four years. The contract includes support for secretarial and administrative services, contract procurement, human resources, records management, technical writing, investigation, industrial relations and real property support.

A partnership of the RJ Lee Group and PBS Engineering and Environmental Inc. has won a three-year subcontract from Hanford cleanup contractor CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. to provide laboratory analysis of geotechnical engineering parameters for the Hanford site. The subcontract is worth approximately $165,000. “We are very excited about partnering with PBS in offering this new geotechnical capability to Hanford and beyond. It will broaden and deepen our analytical service offerings throughout the company and improve our ability to offer CBC students a state-of-the-art experience,” Rich Lee, CEO of RJ Lee Group, said in a release issued this week.

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the managing contractor for the Savannah River Site, has received its thirteenth Voluntary Protection Program Star of Excellence award and fourth Legacy of Stars award, which were presented recently at the VPP national conference, the company announced this week “It is always gratifying to receive outside validation of our successful safety culture,” SRNS President and CEO Carol Johnson said in a statement. “But more importantly, this award reflects the care and compassion SRNS employees have not only for their personal safety, but the safety of their coworkers and community as well. It’s an honor to work with the dedicated men and women of SRNS who make our company one of the safest in this industry.”

Savannah River Remediation, the liquid waste contractor at SRS, late last month marked 6.5 million hours without a lost work day due to injury. The last lost workday incident occurred on March 25, 2013. “From focusing on Nuclear Safety Culture tools and using Human Performance Improvement lessons, to operationally closing massive radioactive waste tanks, SRR employees meet the challenge every day to work safely,” SRR President Stuart MacVean said in a statement issued this week.
