IN DOE
The Department of Energy plans to hold a pre-proposal conference briefing and site tour the week of Oct. 13 for the new Paducah infrastructure support services contract. DOE also said in a notice published late this week that it plans to issue a final Request for Proposals for the new contract ahead of the pre-proposal conference and site tour. The new Paducah infrastructure contract is being set aside for small businesses, and is expected to run for up to five years. The new contract is anticipated to have firm-fixed-price, cost reimbursement, and indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract line items, according to DOE.
Dave Hemelright has been re-elected chair of the Oak Ridge Site-Specific Advisory Board, which provides advice and recommendations to the Department of Energy on environmental issues. Jan Lyons was elected vice chair, and Lisa Hagy was reelected to another term as secretary. The new terms on the Oak Ridge Site Specific Advisory Board will coincide with the federal Fiscal Year 2015, which goes through Sept. 30, 2015. The Site Specific Advisory Board meets the second Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the DOE Information Center in Oak Ridge. The meetings are open to the public.

The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board will hear from Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and other senior DOE officials on the topic of safety culture at a meeting scheduled to be held Oct. 7. The meeting will be the third in series of five meetings the Board plans to hold on the topic of safety culture across the DOE complex. At the Oct. 7 meeting, Moniz is expected to discuss “his vision for establishing a strong safety culture in DOE,” according to a notice published late this week in the Federal Register. Also set to appear at the meeting is National Nuclear Security Administration chief Frank Klotz, who will discuss “concerns identified in NNSA safety culture assessments and present his approaches to address those concerns”; and Deputy Under Secretary for Management and Performance David Klaus, who will discuss “concerns identified in DOE safety culture assessments and his approaches to address those concerns,” the notice says.

URS executive Chuck Conway is joining Los Alamos National Laboratory as the operations manager in the lab’s Nuclear and High Hazard Operations Directorate, Associate Director for Nuclear and High Hazard Operations Cheryl Cabbil said in a message to lab employees this week. Conway most recently served as the startup manager for Retrieval Operations and Deputy Plant Manager at the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Project at Idaho National Laboratory. In his new position, he’ll provide more support to the lab’s nuclear and high hazard operations and environmental waste management operations as the lab moves to resume work at the Radioassay and Nondestructive Testing Facility, Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility, and Area G. Prior to his role at AMWTP, Conway worked at the UK Low Level Waste Repository, served as the TRU System Integration Manager at Idaho National Laboratory, and was the operations manager at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
CH2M-WG Idaho, LLC, the main cleanup contractor at the Department of Energy’s Idaho site, this week received the Secretary of Defense’s “Employer Support Freedom Award” for supporting National Guard and Reserve employees. In April, CWI was named as one of 30 finalists for the award among 2,864 nominees, and in July the contractor was notified that it was one of 15 to win, according to a company release. “We’ve always held a special place in our hearts for our service men and women, and to receive the highest civilian award from the defense department for our efforts is truly an honor,” CWI President and CEO Tom Dieter said in the release.
