IN DOE

Dennis Deziel is stepping down as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Planning and Budget in the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management, effective at the end of this month, an EM spokeswoman said this week. Deziel is reportedly leaving DOE to take a position with Dow Chemical. “Dennis Deziel has announced he will be leaving the Department of Energy effective at the end of the month. Dennis has been a tremendous asset to the Office of Environmental Management.” EM spokeswoman Melissa Burnison said in a written response to WC Monitor. Deziel was named to the DAS position in May after having served as Associate Deputy Assistant Secretary for Program Planning and Budget. It remains unclear who will be tapped to replace Deziel.

The Department of Energy has extended the due date for proposals in the Hanford 222-S Laboratory Analysis and Testing Services procurement from July 17 to Aug. 7, according to an amendment to the Request for Proposals for the new contract issued this week. The new 222-S lab contract, which is being set-aside for small businesses, is set to run for up to five years, consisting of a two-year base period and three one-year option periods, and would cover an estimated 15,000 to 25,000 laboratory analyses each year. DOE released the final RFP for the procurement in June. The new contract is set to be a hybrid type, with Fixed-Price with Award Fee, Labor-Hour, and Cost Reimbursement Contract Line Items (CLINS). The current 222-S Laboratory contract, held by Advanced Technologies and Laboratories, is all cost-reimbursable. ATL is in the final year of its contract, and the Department expects to award the new contract in 2015.

Robert Hastings has joined the Department of Energy’s Office of River Protection as the assistant manager for technical and regulatory support. He determines policy and manages all environment, safety, health and quality functions in support of the tank farms and Waste Treatment Plant projects. Hastings worked for the DOE Richland Operations Office for 27 years, most recently as the deputy assistant manager for mission support, responsible for programmatic, project and contract management for a number of contracts. Before that he was the deputy assistant manager for safety and environment and the acting assistant manager for safety and environment.

IN THE INDUSTRY

Alan Solow will be leaving his role as CEO of Cabrera Services later this year in order to assume the role of President and CEO of Weston Solutions, Inc. Lorenzo Cabrera will assume the CEO position at Cabrera following a transition period this summer and Alan will remain on the Company’s Board of Directors. This marks a return to Weston for Alan who spent two decades working in a variety of positions, including Manager of Federal Programs and Chief Operating Officer. He was also elected to Weston’s Board of Directors in April 2014. "I am very proud of the Cabrera team and appreciate their understanding and willingness to work with me through this transition," Solow told WC Monitor. "Having gone through a significant transformation, Cabrera has been successful in diversifying to serve current and new clients and is on its way to meeting its growth Vision. I am excited to help continue moving the company forward and continuing my support of Cabrera’s growth strategies as a member of the Board of Directors. Cabrera has solid leadership and a strong management team in place, ensuring its continued successes well into the future."
