Wrap Up: Trump’s Advisor says test nukes; TVA paperwork milestone; Y-12 requests graphite ovens; More

By ExchangeMonitor

Former President Donald Trump’s (R) national security advisor Robert O’brien argued the U.S. must test nuclear weapons again outside of a computer model in an article he published in Foreign Affairs.

O’brien said that if China and Russia continue to refuse to engage in peace talks, and continue to upgrade their nuclear arsenal, the U.S. should resume production of uranium-235 and plutonium-239, both essential isotopes for building nuclear weapons, and ignore the nuclear testing moratorium of 1992.

“A second Trump term would see massive investments in this critical technology,” O’brien said.

The Tennessee Valley Authority marked officially amended an April 5, 2017 record of decision, allowing the quasi-governmental corporation to increase the number of tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs) irradiated its commercial light water reactors, according to a release by the Department of Energy Office of NEPA Policy and Compliance.

At the National Nuclear Security Administration’s request, TVA is preparing to irradiate a maximum of 2,496 TPBARs for every cycle of its Watts Bar Unit 1 and Unit 2 reactors.

Consolidated Nuclear Security seeks interested parties to provide graphite ovens to function as cooling water equipment and support other manufacturing activities at the Y-12 National Security Complex, according to an expression of interest notice posted online and an email exchange between Y-12 and the Exchange Monitor.

Consolidated Nuclear Security (CNS) is looking for vendors that have readily available graphite ovens with a 1680 gallon-per-minute flow rate and which can reduce water temperature from 95 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The vendor will work onsite at the Y-12 site in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Interested parties have until July 8 to express their interest, qualifications, and envisioned role to CNS.
