Wrap up: OST needs medics; Russia nukes in Belarus; Hazy days for DOE HQ; more

By ExchangeMonitor

The National Nuclear Security Administration needs at least 50 trained medics ready to treat gunshot trauma “anticipated in a hostile environment,” vehicle accidents on highways and caring for common illnesses for its Office of Secure Transport (OST) personnel.

The agency is seeking a medical service provider capable of training about 50 OST medics at the contractor’s facility, according to a notice published on the federal government’s contracting website.

A qualified bidder must have a medical director who is a licensed physician, board certified in emergency services and emergency medicine who will provide medical direction to OST FAs and authorize the medical care which they provide

Russia will begin deployment of its lower-yield nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus as soon as facilities are ready for them, which will be between July 7 and 8, President Vladimir Putin told Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, according to Russian state media outlet Kommersant

Putin met with Lukashenko in Sochi, Russia on June 9, Kommersant reports. Putin announced the deployment of its lower-yield nukes in an interview with state television on March 25, Reuters and other news outlets reported. U.S. News and World Report confirmed the story. Putin has been saber-rattling about the country’s nuclear capabilities since practically the beginning of the year-old, all-out invasion of Ukraine.

It will be the first deployment of Russian nuclear weapons outside the country’s borders since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The U.S. State Department condemned the move but said the U.S. has no need to adjust its nuclear posture in the region.

The Department of Energy Thursday told employees in areas with bad air quality resulting from Canadian wildfires they could check with their bosses about telecommuting or alternate schedule options.

“As much of the country experiences dangerous air quality conditions from the ongoing Canadian wildfires, the department is committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of our federal workforce, particularly those employees with high-risk medical conditions when dangerous air quality conditions are present,” according to an email distributed to DOE employees. Workers can alto tap annual leave “on a day when the air quality is threatening to an employee’s health and welfare,” according to the email.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s airnow website and just-released guidance on the situation from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, are other resources available for employees to check, according to the email.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation on Tuesday celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund at the Governor’s Mansion in Santa Fe.

More than 125 guests gathered to celebrate the Fund, which has awarded more than $11 million to more than 2,300 students, the Los Alamos Daily Post reports. Speakers included State Rep. Susan Herrera, who was also the founding executive director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation, State Sen. Leo Jaramillo, co-founder of the lab’s scholarship fund, Bob Romero, current and former members of the fund’s advisory committee, donors, current and former LANL Foundation staff and board members, and LANL scholars.

Emergency responders from the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, along with federal, state and local emergency management personnel, conducted an emergency exercise at Oak Ridge on Wednesday.

Agency officials said emergency responders simulated “response activities” and performed environmental monitoring and sampling in the area surrounding the Oak Ridge Reservation. The activities were part of the exercise. A helicopter also flew to and from the Oak Ridge Reservation as part of the exercise.
