The Department of Energy flew a drone 2,000 feet underground to check out portions of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M., the agency said Wednesday.
The drone offered the first visual inspection of an underground air exhaust passageway, or drift, previously closed off to workers, DOE said in the release. Data from the drone will help the agency decide if the area is safe for in-person inspections
Technology from the Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories in New Mexico was used for the drone to inspect the area remotely in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The research was done by cooperation between WIPP prime Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, Sandia National Laboratory’s Autonomy & Unmanned Systems Robotics Group along with researchers at Los Alamos, DOE’s Office of Environmental Management and its Carlsbad Field Office.
