The Energy Department’s top nuclear cleanup official will discuss the transition of DOE nuclear facilities from active missions to cleanup with the bipartisan House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus April 20, one of the caucus’ chairmen said in a press release.
The event will be hosted by the East Tennessee Environmental Business Association (ETEBA), the Energy Facility Contractors Group (EFCOG), and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) on April 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The meeting room will be announced at a later date, a Thursday press release from Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) said.
Monica Regalbuto, DOE assistant secretary for Environmental Management will brief the group, co-chaired by Fleischmann and Rep. Ben Lujan (D-N.M.), about facilities currently managed by the National Nuclear Security Administration, but which could in the foreseeable future be handed over to the Environmental Management office, which handles cleanup.
Regalbuto and Fleischmann drilled down into the topic at a March 15 hearing of the House Appropriations energy and water subcommittee. Regalbuto told Fleischman DOE is preparing a lengthy report about this very topic, but that it might not be ready for public release in time for the mid-April event.
