Prospective bidders have until Monday, April 5, to submit questions to the Department of Energy on a potential five-year, $100-million small business contract for moving transuranic waste from nuclear cleanup sites around the country to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.
The DOE Office of Environmental Management has targeted May for publication of a final request for proposals (RFP) for a new Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Transportation Services contract. Meanwhile 27 individuals representing 16 organizations showed up Wednesday for a virtual briefing by DOE on the planned solicitation.
One of the entities represented was the incumbent, CAST Specialty Transportation, which has a five-year contract scheduled to run through May 27, 2022. While the current contract’s maximum potential payout is $112 million, there have been only $22.7 million in task orders issued by DOE to date, according to the briefing slides.
Other entities with multiple participants signed up for the virtual briefing were Hittman Transport Services, Spire Creative Solutions, TFE Inc., and TMW Inc.
Questions and comments on the briefing should be emailed using the recommended DOE format by 4 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday to [email protected].
The federal agency will not be issuing a draft RFP but will take additional questions once a final solicitation hits the streets, according to the slide presentation. Once a final RFP is out, the bids will likely be due within 45 days, which translates to a July-to-August window, according to DOE.
