WIPP shipments still outpacing 2023 rate through July

By ExchangeMonitor

The Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M., received 45 shipments of transuranic waste during July, according to DOE’s public website.

As usual, the Idaho National Laboratory accounted for the majority of shipments, sending 33. Los Alamos National Laboratory sent four, and the Savannah River Site accounts for the remaining eight shipments for the month of July.

July 2023 had 39 shipments with most also coming from INL, with one shipment from Oak Ridge National Laboratory as seemingly the only bigger difference between July 2023 and 2024.

The first seven months of calendar year 2023 saw 269 shipments to WIPP, whereas the first seven months of 2024 have already seen 287, a 6.7% increase.

With 10 months having passed of the 2024 fiscal year, there have been 401 shipments which is up from the 367 shipments that were received in the first 10 months of fiscal 2023. .
