The Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M., received 50 shipments of transuranic waste during August, according to DOE’s public website.
Leading the shipments again was the Idaho National Laboratory, accounting for 36 of the month’s 50 shipments. Savannah River Site sent seven, Los Alamos sent five, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory accounted for the remaining two shipments for the month of August.
Unlike July 2024, August 2024 shipments were down year-over-year, when the mine took in 58 shipments.
But so far in the 2024 calendar year, shipments are still up overall, compared with the first eight months of 2023, with 337 shipments through August compared with 327 shipments in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, with the government’s fiscal year drawing to a close, WIPP has so far taken in 451 shipments in fiscal year 2024 outpacing by 6.6% the 423 shipments delivered in the first eleven months of fiscal year 2023.
