WIPP receives 37 shipments in July; slightly lags 2021 pace

The Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad, N.M., received 37 shipments of defense-related transuranic waste during the month of July, according to data from the agency’s public website.

The site received 26 shipments from the Idaho National Laboratory, eight from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, one from the Oak Ridge Site in Tennessee and two from the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.

As of Tuesday, the most recent shipment recorded on the website, which runs about two weeks behind, was July 30.

Through the first seven months of 2022, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) had received 134 shipments. By comparison, during the first seven months of 2021, the underground disposal site received 139 shipments. The site received 43 shipments during July 2021.
