The Department of Energy’s Carlsbad N.M. Field Office and its Bechtel contractor for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant hold a community forum Tuesday evening July 11 at the Marriott Albuquerque.
The public forum, viewable online, will be the first major public discussion by managers at the field office and Bechtel’s Salado Isolation Mining Contractors since the New Mexico Environment Department and the federal agency announced two weeks ago they have struck a deal on a new 10-year state permit for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad.
The new permit and its conditions are scheduled for formal release by the state on Monday, Aug. 15. The state sought a larger voice in the future of the facility for deep underground disposal of defense-related transuranic waste.
The Tuesday community forum kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time and will include presentations from DOE’s Carlsbad Field Office manager Mark Bollinger as well as Salado Isolation Mining’s president Ken Harrawood.
