The White House sent Jeff Baran’s nomination for another five years on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the Senate, where the chair of the committee in charge of vetting the commissioner has vowed swift advancement, if possible.
The Joe Biden administration officially nominated Baran on Tuesday, according to a White House press release, fulfilling the intention it telegraphed last week when it announced its intent to nominate the longtime commissioner for a term that would expire on July 30, 2028.
Baran’s current term is set to expire on June 30. He has served on the NRC since 2014. Baran holds a juris doctor from Harvard Law School and masters and bachelors degrees in political science from Ohio University. He worked on Capitol Hill prior to joining the commission.
Baran is something of a safety hawk on the commission, staking out positions that would be tougher on industry than some of his colleagues. In 2021, he called the NRC’s proposed decommissioning rule “laissez faire.”
