Pennsylvania-based Westinghouse Nuclear signed a contract with Vattenfall, a Swedish utility, to dismantle the Ågesta Nuclear Plant near Stockholm, the country’s first commercial nuclear power plant.
Along with performing site work, Westinghouse will manufacture the special tools for the job. The company will mechanically cut the reactor vessel underwater, along with its internal components, and pack the pieces in containers for Vattenfall to remove from site, according to a Westinghouse press release.
The Ågesta Nuclear Plant opened in 1964 and operated for ten years until its 1974 shutdown. The plant’s nuclear fuel and the heavy water were removed directly after the shutdown, according to the release.
