WESTINGHOUSE ANNOUNCES SPANISH INTERIM STORAGE CONTRACT
Westinghouse Electric Company announced earlier this week that it has received a contract from ENRESA (Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos), Spain’s nuclear waste and decommissioning agency, to provide engineering services on the construction of an interim waste facility to host spent nuclear fuel and high level waste. The multi-million dollar contract calls for Westinghouse to revise the generic design and develop engineering of the facility’s main buildings. The project, located in central Spain, began in April 2013 with an estimated completion date in 2017. According to a Westinghouse release, “The facility could store up to 13,000 cubic meters of waste of which 10,000 cubic meters will be spent fuel and the rest HLW and other long-lived waste not suitable for disposal in the El Cabril repository for low- and intermediate-level nuclear waste in southern Spain.” Westinghouse will partner with TRSA S.A. and GHESA S.A., the major partners of Empresarios Agrupados A.I.E., a leading international engineering and consulting service from Spain.
