Like their beloved Buffalo Bills, workers for the Department of Energy and its cleanup contractor at the West Valley Demonstration Project in Western New York are not easily derailed by possible lake effect snow.
“The snow was cleared last night and this morning; and we are operating under normal work hours,” a site spokesperson said Monday morning in response to an Exchange Monitor email inquiry. “No delays or cancelled shifts.”
The National Weather Service forecast for West Valley, N..Y., called for a lake effect snow warning lasting from Monday through 7 p.m. Tuesday. The term describes a situation where cold air typically from Canada moves across the Great Lakes and can result in snowfall accumulating at two or more inches per hour.
The Monday forecast predicted snow accumulation of anywhere from four-to-11 inches through Tuesday night.
The nuclear cleanup site is 35 miles south of Buffalo, N.Y. In a snow-filled football game on national television, the Buffalo Bills defeated the San Francisco 49ers 35-to-10 on Sunday night.
West Valley is currently being remediated by a Jacobs-BWX Technologies joint venture in a contract that is scheduled to expire in February. Jacobs recently spun off its DOE contracts to Amentum Holdings, which is now a publicly-traded company. A group led by BWXT, with Jacobs Technology as one of the junior partners, was awarded a new 10-year contract Oct. 31. DOE has yet to announce a notice to proceed with transition.
