The Jacobs-led joint venture in charge of remediating the West Valley Demonstration Project Site in New York won $322,000 or 69% of a potential fee of $467,000 during a six-month period in 2019.
The U.S. Department of Energy recently issued the scorecard for CH2M Hill BWXT West Valley LLC (CHBWV) for the period from March 1, 2019 through Aug. 28, 2019.
The federal agency praised the contractor for making improvement in safety, quality assurance, emergency management, and security. At the same time though there were four vehicle accidents during this award fee period as well as a problem controlling storm water, according to DOE.
In its prior review, the contractor won $346,000 or about 75% of a potential $461,000 for work done between August 29, 2018 through Feb. 28, 2019.
CHBWV’s $542.3 million contract at West Valley started in 2011 and runs through March, 9, 2020. The contractor handles Phase 1 decommissioning at the former nuclear fuel reprocessing site, which includes removing radioactive waste and contaminated equipment.
The Energy Department issued a request for information notice in October 2018 to start market research for the West Valley Phase 1B deactivation and demolition.
The U.S. Senate last month most passed a West Valley reauthorization bill, which calls for funding of $75 million per year through fiscal 2026, the amount equal to what’s in the fiscal 2020 budget.
The legislation, originally introduced in the U.S. House by Rep. Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), also tells the Government Accountability Office to do a study on radioactive waste at site — including types of waste, disposal options, and costs – within 18 months of enactment.
West Valley is a 200-acre property within the state-owned, 3,300-acre Western New York Nuclear Service Center. Between 1966 and 1972 the site was the location of a commercial nuclear fuel reprocessing plant.
