Waste Control Specialists plans to deliver on Wednesday a second round of responses to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s request for supplemental information (RSI) ahead of the agency’s review of the company’s license application for its planned consolidated interim spent nuclear fuel storage facility in West Texas.
WCS first responded to NRC in July, clarifying capacity details for the nuclear waste storage facility and responding to about 52 percent of the RSIs, according to the company, which addressed 54 items in the filing. Wednesday’s filing is expected to address 31 more items covered in the RSIs. The company also is slated to file responses to eight additional items on Sept. 30 and 11 items on Oct. 31.
NRC in July determined that WCS’ 3,000-page application to build and operate the facility lacked the technical detail required for the agency to conduct its full license application review, prompting the RSIs. WCS intends to build a 40,000-metric-ton capacity facility with a 40-year NRC license.
