Waste Control Specialists was expected to provide an update next week in Andrews, Texas, about the company’s efforts to expand its existing low-level waste disposal site there, a tri-state waste-disposal commission announced Wednesday.
The update from Waste Control Specialists, which operates a state-owned low-level waste disposal site at its Andrews County property, was scheduled as part of a larger meeting of the Texas Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission.
The commission, comprising Texas, Vermont and Maine, was to meet at the Andrews County Commissioners Court in Andrews at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time on Aug. 24. The commission also planned to stream interactive video of the meeting online, according to the agenda posted on the commission’s website.
Aside from operating Texas’ low-level waste disposal facility, Waste Control Specialists is licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to operate a federal interim storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. The company planned to build that facility next to its existing low-level waste facility. However, a state law passed in 2021 prohibits storage of spent nuclear fuel in Texas.
Waste Control Specialists was also due to renew its radioactive material license with the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality. The license expires Sept. 10 and the company was scheduled to provide an update on its renewal application next week.
