As the Department of Energy continues to evaluate bids for the follow-on contract to operate Oak Ridge’s Transuranic Waste Processing Center, DOE this week again extended by six months the current contract held by incumbent Wastren Advantage. The contractor received its first extension in January that ran through mid-July, and with the latest extension WAI will be in place until January 16, 2016.
The TWPC is used to prepare contact- and remote-handled transuranic waste at Oak Ridge for off-site disposal. The new contract to operate the facility is being set aside for small businesses that meet a $38.5 million size standard, and is expected to be worth $100 million to $300 million. It is set to run for up to five years, consisting of a three-year base period and one two-year option period. Bids were due in December, and DOE had originally planned to award and complete transition by July 1. WAI is not leading a bid of its own for the new contract because it does not meet the size standard being used for the procurement, but is part of another team.
