UT-BATTELLE RELEASES EOI FOR WASTE PROCESSING AT ORNL

By ExchangeMonitor
Oak Ridge National Laboratory contractor UT-Battelle, LLC, released an expression of interest Friday seeking companies willing to process radioactive waste generated at the lab. ORNL does not have the capability to process all remote handled and contact handled transuranic and liquid waste resulting from work at the lab, according to the EOI. “ORNL currently relies on outlets for these materials through DOE Environmental Management that are expected to no longer be available in 2016 for TRU solid materials and 2021 for RH liquids,” the EOI states. It notes that about 20 cubic meters a year of contact-handled waste and 5 cubic meters a year of remote-handled waste is produced at several facilities at ORNL. It adds, “ORNL is particularly interested in the possible application of ‘right-sized’ mobile technologies that would minimize the construction of fixed capital assets, and or the utilization of subcontractor or other DOE assets in a manner that also results in optimized future operating (including transportation and disposal) costs.” Responses are due Oct. 31.
