URS TANK FARMS EXEC SPENCER TO JOIN B&W

Babcock & Wilcox is bringing on Chuck Spencer—who most recently served as the President of URS-led Hanford tank farms contractor Washington River Protection Solutions—in a senior corporate position under B&W Technical Services Group President George Dudich, WC Monitor has learned. Spencer announced his retirement from URS and WRPS on Friday and his last day will be Jan. 20. Dudich, who left URS to join B&W in 2010, was named president of the Technical Services Group in November and the hiring of Spencer is one of his first major personnel moves. It remains to be seen exactly what Spencer’s new role will entail, but given his recent experience as a project manager and history with the nuclear weapons complex, B&W could choose to bid him as one of its key personnel on the combined Y-12/Pantex contract.

Spencer came to Hanford as president of Washington Closure Hanford, leading work to successfully turn around a project that had been plagued with a string of problems over 18 months, before taking over as president of Washington River Protection Solutions in 2009. “I will greatly miss both projects, but, alas, it’s time for me to return to the East Coast to allow my wife and I to get back closer to family and aging parents,” he said in a message to WRPS employees. Mike Johnson will serve as acting president at WRPS while a search is conducted to permanently fill the position. Johnson came to Hanford in May to serve as project operations manager for the tank farm contractor.

Spencer came to Hanford after a four-year stint leading nuclear waste management at the Sellafield Site in the United Kingdom. He has worked at Savannah River, Los Alamos and Idaho. He also served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, retiring as commanding officer of USS Sturgeon, a nuclear-powered submarine.
