The Nuclear Regulatory Commission highlighted its planned regulation reviews for the fall of 2013 as well as for Fiscal Year 2014 in the Unified Agenda of Regulatory and De-regulatory Actions released by the Office of Management and Budget last week. The NRC actions include a review of station blackout mitigation strategies in regards to maintaining spent fuel pools. The blackout mitigation study comes in response to the Fukushima disaster in which an earthquake and subsequent tsunami knocked out power that was maintaining the spent fuel pool and led to spent fuel pool fires. The Unified Agenda also includes a planned proposed ruling on the site-specific analysis for unique waste streams as outlined in 10 CFR Part 61 during FY 2014. The Unified Agenda is meant to inform stakeholders of planned regulation activities by the various federal agencies for the upcoming fiscal year.
