U.K. Lawmakers Commit to Post-Brexit Environmentalism

By ExchangeMonitor

More than 150 members of the United Kingdom’s Parliament have signed a pledge committing to continue working to protect the environment after the nation leaves the European Union. “I believe that following the EU referendum, the UK government, working with administrations in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, must build a healthy and prosperous future for all,” says the pledge, organized by the Greener UK coalition. “This means a thriving natural world on land and at sea, clean air and water, communities connected to nature, and a sustainable economy.”

The pledge sets out three action points for the MPs: “establish the UK as a world leader on the environment by committing to match or exceed current environmental, wildlife and habitat protections; ensure the UK leads on climate change by publishing robust low carbon investment plans and ratifying the Paris Agreement this year; [and] create a countryside richer in nature by supporting farmers and landowners to deliver environmental benefits alongside a thriving farming sector.”

The U.K. ratified the international Paris Agreement on climate change in November during the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakesh, Morocco.

The Greener UK coalition consists of 13 environmental organizations including the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and E3G.
