Two WIPP-Related Events Slated for Thursday

By ExchangeMonitor

On Thursday, the same day the Energy Department will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the reopening of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, N.M., New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez will mark the ceremonial opening of the underground nuclear waste storage facility’s new emergency operations center.

The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Skeen-Whitlock Building, 4021 National Parks Highway in Carlsbad, according to a DOE press release. Those interested in attending should email Devon Long at [email protected] or call 575-234-7262.

WIPP is about 26 miles outside of Carlsbad. The emergency operations center is located in the Skeen-Whitlock Building.

Those who attend the ribbon cutting still have time to make the WIPP town hall on recovery activities, which will take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carlsbad City Council Chambers, 101 N. Halagueno St., about 4 miles from the emergency operations center. The town hall also will be live streamed at http://new.livestream.com/rrv/.
