Toshiba Installs CCU System on Waste Incineration Plant

By ExchangeMonitor

Toshiba announced Wednesday that it has installed the world’s first commercial-use carbon capture and utilization (CCU) system on a municipal waste incineration plant in Saga, Japan. “I am delighted that we have successfully completed this advanced, first-of-a-kind CCU plant. Toshiba provides the world with technologies and services for making, transmitting and storing clean energy, all essential for realizing a low-carbon economy,” said Takao Konishi, vice president of the Thermal and Hydro Power Systems and Services division in Toshiba’s Energy Systems and Solutions Co., in a press release.

The new system features chemical absorption carbon capture technology developed by Toshiba for thermal power plants. The system will begin operation on Aug. 26 and is expected to capture 10 tons of CO2 a day from flue gas. The captured CO2 will be sold for use in crop cultivation and algae culture.
