A majority of Canadians would like to see the nation abandon coal-fired energy generation by 2030, according to a recent survey conducted by Nanos Research for climate think tank Clean Energy Canada. The survey found that 73 percent of the 1,000 Canadians contacted support the prompt closure of the nation’s coal plants. “Canada’s last coal-fired power plant is currently scheduled to shut down in 2043. However, Alberta has committed to stop burning coal for electricity by 2030, and Ontario phased out coal power in 2014,” Clean Energy Canada said in a press release.
‘The world is shifting to clean energy, and Canada can be among the leaders if we adopt strong policies to capitalize on our clean energy advantage. This survey found strong support for investing in clean technology and switching to clean power—the kinds of choices that will make Canada more competitive in the long run,” Merran Smith, executive director of Clean Energy Canada, said in the release.
Canada currently has eight coal-fired power plants providing over 500 megawatts of installed capacity, according to the International Energy Agency.
