Navy Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) on Wednesday announced it plans to award Charles Stark Draper Laboratories a sole-source special project alteration contract to provide the “effort and oversight” to procure the Trident 2 Life Extension production materials, according to a notice posted on Fed Biz Opps. Draper is the prime contractor for the development, production and fleet support of “complex, application-specific devices and subassemblies” of Trident 2 Mk-6 guidance systems, according to the notice. Additionally, the announcement states Draper is the only company with the “unique facilities and personnel expertise required for this program.” Work will start on Feb. 1 and continue until April 30, 2019. SSP and Draper declined to comment about the planned contract.
Two months ago, SSP announced it will contract with Draper to ensure Trident 2 Guidance Systems are sustained throughout their lifecycle. That contract will involve detailed analysis of all factory and fleet performance data and development of alternative technologies to mitigate product obsolescence. Draper will also provide program management, administration, engineering, contracting, configuration and process control for maintenance of the Mk-6 Guidance System to ensure it meets all program objectives, including cost, electrical, and mechanical interface control for high-accuracy instrumentation applications, according to a notice issued in April.
