Navy Strategic Systems Programs has awarded Lockheed Martin Space Systems a $27.5 million sole-source, unpriced-letter contract for long lead material and the “labor, planning and scheduling necessary” to sustain the Fiscal Year 2015 Trident 2 production schedule, the Defense Department announced on July 6. Work is expected to complete by Sept. 30, 2020. The FY 2014 Navy weapons procurement account will fully fund the award. Funds will not expire at the end of FY 2015. The notice was the second Trident 2 contract-related announcement in two weeks, following a June 24 DoD notice that the department plans to award Charles Stark Draper Laboratories a sole-source special project alteration contract to provide the “effort and oversight” to procure Trident 2 Life Extension production materials.
While Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the Trident 2 life extension program, Draper is the prime contractor for the development, production and fleet support of “complex, application-specific devices and subassemblies” of Trident 2 MK 6 guidance systems, according to Fed Biz Opps. Additionally, FBO stated that Draper is the only company with the “unique facilities and personnel expertise required for this program.” Work on that contract will start on Feb. 1 and continue until April 30, 2019. SSP did not respond to two separate NS&D Monitor requests for comment on each weapon program.
