Speakers from Canada, IAEA, DOE kick off Waste Management

PHOENIX — Executives from Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency are scheduled to help kick off the 2025 Waste Management Symposia here Monday.

Canada is this year’s featured nation at the conference for nuclear waste professionals held annually in Downtown Phoenix. Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization President and CEO Laurie Swami will help kick off the morning plenary session.

Swami, who has been in her current job since 2016, is responsible for implementing Canada’s plan for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel, according to her online bio for the conference. Last year the organization selected a site in northwest Ontario for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

Other speakers during the morning plenary session include Olena Mykolaichuk, director of the Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology, for the International Atomic Energy Agency, Roger Jarrell, a senior adviser for environmental management at the U.S. Department of Energy along with Mark Whitney, president of the energy and environment business at Virginia-based Amentum. 

The conference runs through Thursday.
