Southern Co., developer of the Kemper County Energy Facility carbon capture and storage project and manager of the National Carbon Capture Center, has taken over leadership of the Carbon Capture International Test Center Network (ITCN), the company announced Wednesday. Through the network, carbon capture test facilities share knowledge in an effort to accelerate commercial deployment of the technology.
Leadership of the network changes every two years and has been held by Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) of Norway since 2013. The NCCC will chair and operate the ITCN with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for the next two years
“Southern Company is at the forefront of worldwide efforts to create the next generation of carbon capture technologies,” Southern Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kimberly Greene said in a press release. “Through our partnership with DOE and ITCN members, we are building on our commitment to finding real solutions by developing advanced coal-based technologies.”
