The San Onofre Generating Nuclear Station’s decommissioning trust fund should adequately cover all the costs of decommissioning, Southern California Edison’s CEO Ted Craver said during the company’s second quarter earnings call this week. SCE conducted a site specific decommissioning estimate for the SONGS cleanup, and the company determined it would cost an estimated $2.9 billion in present value to complete the project—well within the $3.1 billion SCE currently has in the trust fund. “The bottom line is that we have $2.9 billion in present value costs versus $3.1 billion in present value of the trust funds, which leads us to conclude that San Onofre decommissioning is now fully funded and future contributions are not needed,” Craver said during the call. SCE expects to submit its Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report, which outlines the planned decommissioning approach for the site, to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission sometime in the coming months, with September as the target date.
