SM1-A Environmental Assessment to be Completed by March

By ExchangeMonitor

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to finish the draft Environmental Assessment for the proposed decommissioning of the SM-1A reactor at Fort Greely in Alaska by March 2021, according to an update released Friday.

The Corps visited the site in September to collect soil and environmental samples to complete the assessment and met with municipalities and local tribes for feedback.

The Department of Energy will accept title to radioactive waste from the decommissioning project in the Federal Waste Facility at Waste Control Specialists near Andrews, Texas, and potentially at the Nevada National Security Site, DOE Hanford, or Energy Solutions in Utah, according to a Corps of Engineers presentation.

The Corps plans to award the $200 million decommissioning contract in 2022.
