Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is continuing to oppose the Department of Energy’s plans to ship a portion of its uranium-233 inventory currently stored at Oak Ridge to the Nevada National Security Site for disposal in the wake of two public meetings held last week in Nevada on the issue. While DOE has said it has the authority to move forward with the shipments of Consolidated Edison Uranium Solidification Project (CEUSP) material, in an effort to alleviate Nevada officials’ concerns over the shipments, the Department held last week’s public meetings and has formed a working group made up of DOE and state officials. In a Nov. 14 statement, though, Reid said, “Following yesterday’s public meeting, I remain concerned about DOE’s plans to store Consolidated Edison Uranium Solidification Project (CEUSP) canisters at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). With the information I have today, I still do not support the transportation of these canisters. I’m pleased that DOE and the Governor’s office continue discussions on this proposal through the Working Group. My office will remain apprised of these discussions.”
