The Savannah River Site’s management and operations contractor has been fined $17,650 for violations related to hazardous waste transport. According to an Energy Department occurrence report, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, an agency under the U.S. Department of Transportation, noted violations committed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) on in a report dated Nov. 7.
The DOT agency conducted the compliance review on Oct. 27 to determine if SRNS was compliant with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), the Federal Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), and the Federal Motor Carrier Commercial Regulations (FMCCR).
Upon review, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration concluded that SRNS failed to provide in-depth security awareness training. The contractor also transported a permitted material without maintaining a record of communication for the mandatory six months. The violations occurred during an on-site transportation activity that was part of the normal work routine, according to the report. The report does not state what types of hazardous materials were being transported.
SRNS and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration were contacted, but did not provide comment by press time.
